The Ralph Froio Senior Center, Pittsfield, Massachusetts
The Ralph J. Froio Senior Center was a 14,000 SF conversion of the Capital Theater. The project was completed on time and within budget. Program space included social day care, meals programs, crafts, ceramics, woodworking, game rooms, coffee shop, kitchens, assembly areas, classrooms, lounges, board room, R.S.V.P., and administrative office space. Alterations included entirely new stair towers, electrical, mechanical, elevator, windows, and finishes. Program goals required a light and airy building that was energy efficient, handicap accessible, and easy to maintain. Barry Architects worked closely with Northeast Utilities when designing electrical and mechanical systems to ensure the most energy efficient design would be achieved. This resulted in a $20,000 rebate to the City of Pittsfield from Northeast Utilities. The building was also designed to make all elements and entrances handicap accessible and in compliance with all ADA regulations. Private fundraising from the community provided over $100,000 to furnish the facility.
